The covert partner-tracking is already here, and a companion doll is on its way to being a talking one, but a chip that streams another person's mind has no credible route yet.

A show about a woman who cannot get away from a piece of technology was itself taken away. Made for Love ran for two seasons on HBO Max, in April 2021 and April 2022. HBO Max cancelled it in June 2022, after the merger that made Warner Bros. Discovery,. In the mid-2020s a thing could be deleted from a platform as easily as a person could be deleted from a feed, and nobody found it strange.

Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti) has spent ten years married to Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen), a tech founder, living inside his Hub, a vast and gleaming compound where everything has been tuned to please her. Then she leaves. She learns that Byron has had a device implanted in her brain, one that lets him track where she is, see what she sees and read her emotional data, and that he wants to take the marriage to its logical conclusion by joining their minds. She runs to the only home she has left, her father Herb (Ray Romano), who is living with a sex doll called Diane, and Byron's security people set off after her.

It's a farce, and the farce is the point.

The art: the cruellest joke is the nicest house

Alissa Nutting wrote the 2017 novel; the series was developed with Dean Bakopoulos, Patrick Somerville and Christina Lee, and each season is eight episodes of 25 to 29 minutes. That brevity is a virtue. The premise is dark enough that a longer running time would have turned it into misery, and these half-hours keep it moving.

The Hub is the best thing in it. It is a luxury resort with a hotel's smoothness and none of its honesty: Byron used data from Hazel to make their life there artificially pleasurable. One of the show's best ideas is that, in a house built entirely out of pleasing, nobody has to be unkind. Byron isn't a brute. He is a man whose idea of love is a perfectly tuned environment, and Hazel is living in it.

Milioti is the reason it works. The critics' consensus on the first season singles out her charisma and comic timing, and it's right: she plays a woman who is frightened and furious and very funny, often in the same breath, and she never lets the show forget there's a person at the middle of it. Magnussen makes Byron a man who has never been told no and cannot imagine the sentence, which is less a villain than a type. Romano gives Herb a likeable shabbiness that's just right opposite all that polish. Patti Harrison, as Hazel's ally Bangles de la Morga, is a welcome jolt of chaos. The show is at its best when it treats everything in the Hub, however absurd, as equally ordinary.

Where it falls short of an 8 is in the plumbing. It was cancelled partway through its own argument, and that isn't wholly the writers' fault. But the world outside the marriage, the company, the board, the rules of the technology, is never built as carefully as the marriage inside it.

The prophecy: the real chip is the phone

The series is sold on a chip, and the chip is the least near thing in it. The show's other bets, about how love gets watched, are another matter.

The chip. Nothing yet streams one person's sight, location and feelings to another. There are real pieces. In 2018, researchers decoded changes in mood from electrodes implanted in seven epilepsy patients. In 2025 Stanford researchers reported an implant that could decode some of a person's inner speech. Neuralink put its first device into a human in January 2024, and its first patient later found that most of the threads had come loose. These are medical devices for people with paralysis or disease, each reading a narrow signal in a single trained person, and none of them is a window into someone's day. Colorado and California have since passed laws that treat neural data as sensitive, which tells you something: the law got there before the product did.

The marriage. This is where Made for Love is closest to the present, and where it's most uncomfortable to watch. You don't need a brain implant to watch your partner. The US Federal Trade Commission brought its first case against "stalking" apps in October 2019, over software designed to run covertly on someone else's phone. Bluetooth trackers followed, and in May 2024 Apple and Google announced an industry standard for alerting people to unknown trackers moving with them, which arrived because people had been using them to follow other people. The show's chip is an exaggeration of something that already exists and works fine without surgery. Byron's insight is really a landlord's: if you own the platform, you can know everything and call it care.

The merging. The "made for love" pitch is that two minds linked together would stop misunderstanding each other. A 2019 experiment named BrainNet connected three people, using EEG to read two senders and magnetic stimulation to give the result to a receiver, so that together they could play a Tetris-like game. The average accuracy was 81 per cent, for a yes-or-no decision. It's a fine bit of science and a long way from a marriage. A 2023 Nature study of a speech implant, in one participant with paralysis, reached 78 words a minute with a median word error rate of 25 per cent. A link between two people that carries meaning is a different order of problem. It may never be solved, and it would be a strange gift to anyone if it were.

Diane. Herb's doll is the quietest prediction and perhaps the surest. The RealDoll in its current form dates from 1996, its maker Abyss Creations is now a subsidiary of Realbotix, and Realbotix is taking reservations for humanoid robots with a talking AI persona, positioned for companionship and loneliness, with deliveries expected from the second half of 2027. What the show noticed is that the person who falls for the stand-in isn't a fool. Herb is a lonely man with a patient, uncomplaining companion. The jokes are on the world, not on him.

The reading

Is it a warning? Not exactly. Made for Love isn't about the chip, which is the least likely thing in it, but about what a person is owed inside a relationship that holds all the data. It says what a good many people already know about the platforms in their lives, that being looked after and being watched are one product with two labels. A relationship where one side can see everything isn't an intimacy; it's an account.

It's a short, sharp, imperfect series that stopped just short of finishing its point, and that was probably the one thing it didn't plan. As for how it ends, nobody got to find out.

Made for Love is most prescient about its marriage, not its chip: covert tracking of a partner is already illegal in some forms and common in others, and a talking companion doll is close to market. The brain implant that streams another person's sight and emotions, and the linking of two minds, have no credible route within a generation.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

A brain implant transmits a person's location, what they see and their emotional state to another person, who can monitor them in real time.

Weight 5/5 · Core premise: Byron's chip, and Hazel's flight from it, is what the series is about.

Implants can now read narrow signals in single patients: mood-state changes in epilepsy patients, attempted and some inner speech in people with paralysis. Location is trivial and needs no implant. Reading what a person sees or feels in general, from a device that works outside a clinic and without training, is not shown anywhere. Neuralink's first patient lost most of the device's threads from his brain, which shows how fragile even the basic hardware still is. The range is wide because the route is unclear and may never be taken. 123

Covert monitoring apps and Bluetooth trackers are sold and used for exactly this. In October 2019 the US Federal Trade Commission brought its first case against developers of apps designed to run surreptitiously on another person's phone. Bluetooth tags such as AirTags were widely linked to stalking from 2021, and in May 2024 Apple and Google shipped alerts for unknown trackers. The year given is the date of the first regulatory case; the practice is older. Defences are improving but incomplete. The show's version needs no phone, but the behaviour is the same. 456

Brain-to-brain links exist as laboratory demonstrations. A 2013 study linked two rats, and a 2019 experiment let three people pass yes-or-no decisions to one another, using EEG and magnetic stimulation. These carry one bit at a time, at modest accuracy. Even the best published speech decoder, for one person with paralysis, still had a 25 per cent word error rate. A link that shares meaning, memory or feeling between two healthy adults has no known mechanism, and this may never be built. 789

Lifelike dolls have been sold for decades, and AI-driven talking versions have been shown. Realbotix, the owner of the RealDoll maker, is taking reservations for Series 1 humanoid robots with AI personas, with deliveries expected from the second half of 2027 and not guaranteed. The dolls and the chatbots both exist already, so the claim is about how well they are joined and how widely they sell, which is why the status is ARRIVING. 1011
