Did Oryx and Crake come true?

Quick answer

Mostly not yet. Oryx and Crake (2003) has a P(n) of 35% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 0 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A single insider engineers a lethal pathogen, hides it in a mass-market product, and kills most of humanity', is still far off. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2033.

Oryx and Crake is most prescient about its commerce: gene-edited pigs for transplants, cell-grown meat and AI-designed viruses are in trials, on sale or in the literature. Its two core ideas, a deliberately engineered pandemic that ends most of humanity and a designed replacement species, have no credible path inside fifty years.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

Pigs are genetically engineered to grow organs for transplant into humans.

Gene-edited pig kidneys are now in formal clinical trials, one design with 10 edits and another with 69, at a small number of US centres. A patient at Massachusetts General Hospital lived a record 271 days with a pig kidney before it was removed because function was falling. The bottleneck is long-term survival of the graft, not the engineering of the pig. Human-pig chimeras, the part of the pigoon that mixes species, remain at the early-embryo stage. We count the claim as arrived when pig organs are routine, approved treatment. 123

A single insider engineers a lethal pathogen, hides it in a mass-market product, and kills most of humanity.

The tool is arriving: AI models have designed complete working bacteriophage genomes, and the authors' own commentators say governance has not kept pace. But those are viruses of bacteria, far simpler than any human pathogen, and the team excluded human-infecting viruses from training. A 2024 RAND red-team exercise found that chatbot access did not improve attack plans over internet access alone. Killing most of humanity would need a pathogen that is both highly lethal and highly transmissible, plus a delivery route. We set the median beyond fifty years and the range wide, because this is a tail risk that depends on future capability and on whether controls such as mandatory DNA-synthesis screening are adopted. 456

Gene-edited babies have been born once, in China in 2018, and the scientist responsible was jailed. WHO called clinical use of heritable editing irresponsible in 2021, and it remains illegal in many countries including the US. A start-up has raised $30 million to research embryo editing, but it describes safety research, not people. Designing a whole new set of traits across diet, behaviour and physiology involves thousands of interacting genes that nobody can yet write. We expect single-gene embryo edits long before anything resembling a designed species, and the range assumes it is ever attempted. 789

Meat is grown as a factory product without raising whole animals, and sold as ordinary fast food.

The US cleared cell-cultivated chicken from UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat for sale in June 2023, but neither company had announced a first-availability date at the time of approval. Florida banned cultivated meat, Texas followed, and in March 2026 a federal appeals court held that federal law does not override Florida's ban. The novel's product is grown as parts of an animal body, which is not the cell-culture route, so the claim covers the outcome of meat made without the animal. We count it as arrived when it is sold at ordinary fast-food prices and scale. 101112
