Did 12 Monkeys come true?

Quick answer

Mostly not yet. 12 Monkeys (1995) has a P(n) of 38% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 1 are arriving. Its central premise, 'People can be sent backwards in time to gather information that changes decisions in the present', is still far off. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2029.

12 Monkeys was right about the part nobody wanted to hear: a novel virus crosses the world in months and the warnings come from people the system has already filed as unreliable. It was wrong about scale and about the machine. The 2020 pandemic killed a fraction of one per cent of humanity, and nobody has built a way back.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

People can be sent backwards in time to gather information that changes decisions in the present.

No experiment has sent anything backwards in time. Relativity allows travel into the future by moving fast or sitting deep in gravity, and the clock-on-a-plane tests confirm the effect at tiny scale. Travel to the past needs exotic spacetimes whose physical plausibility is doubted, and some physicists argue the laws of physics forbid it. We give a wide, late range because the honest answer is that nobody knows the route. 12

The worst recorded pandemic, the Black Death, killed perhaps 30 to 60 per cent of Europe's population over several years. The WHO estimates COVID-19 was associated with about 14.9 million excess deaths in 2020 and 2021, a small fraction of one per cent of a world of nearly eight billion. A near-total die-off has no precedent, and we see no credible path to one inside our window, though the range stays wide because tail risks are hard to date. 34

On 31 December 2019 Wuhan's health commission reported a cluster of pneumonia cases. By 30 January 2020 the WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern, and on 11 March 2020 it characterised COVID-19 as a pandemic. The scale was far smaller than the film's, but the shape, a new virus crossing borders faster than institutions could react, was real. 56

The failure is real: the WHO's own timeline shows the first emergency committee on 22 January 2020 could not reach consensus. The remedy is partly built. The World Health Assembly adopted the WHO Pandemic Agreement on 20 May 2025, but it opens for signature only after a pathogen-access annex is agreed, and it enters into force after 60 ratifications. We count it as arriving, not arrived. 78
