Did Westworld come true?

Quick answer

Partly. Westworld (2016) has a P(n) of 64% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'Androids that look, move, speak and feel like people, indistinguishable from them at close range, are manufactured and used as theme-park performers', is still far off. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2031.

Westworld's headline invention, androids no one can tell from people, is the part furthest from us. Its quieter bets have fared better: software characters that remember and improvise exist, and companies already hold large records of customer behaviour, while predictive risk scoring is common enough that the EU has banned its sharpest forms.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

  1. WEST-1

Androids that look, move, speak and feel like people, indistinguishable from them at close range, are manufactured and used as theme-park performers.

Weight 5/5 · Core premise: the Hosts are the show's subject, and every storyline depends on them passing for human.

Home humanoids are now on sale, but 1X's Neo still relies on remote human operators for hard tasks, and robots remain clumsy in unstructured settings. The International Federation of Robotics, cited in a 2026 analysis, puts useful and widely accepted home androids about 20 years away. A robot that passes for a person up close would also need convincing skin, hands, balance and speech together, which no developer has shown. The range assumes nobody decides the product is worth building. 12

In 2023 researchers built a sandbox of 25 software agents that stored experiences, reflected on them, planned their days and coordinated a party from a single seed idea. Physical characters are further behind: Disney's Olaf walks and talks in a park, but public sources do not establish how much of his behaviour is autonomous. The software half has arrived in research. A commercial, fully autonomous character in a theme park, with persistent memory of individual guests, has not. 345

Individual risk scores already sort defendants, and a 2016 ProPublica analysis found one widely used tool was right about future violent crime only about one time in five. The EU AI Act now prohibits social scoring that causes unfair treatment, and bans criminal-risk predictions based solely on profiling. Those bans exist because the tools do. What has not arrived is one integrated system modelling everyone across every domain of life. What exists is a patchwork of separate vendors and agencies. 678

A US regulator's staff report documented in 2024 that large social media and streaming companies collected vast amounts of user data, kept it indefinitely and fed it into algorithms and AI, often with weak deletion and little opt-out. The year of arrival is the year it was formally documented; the practice is older. The show's version, secret and aimed at copying minds, is more sinister than the commercial reality, which is disclosed in terms of service, and the 1X Neo shows the same pattern moving into homes. 91011

Evidence
  1. FOR How Imagineers brought a free-roaming robotic Olaf to life. Attractions Magazine, 2026-03-16. A walking, talking Disney character robot, trained with reinforcement learning, entered a park in March 2026, but it is a cartoon figure, not a human double.
  2. AGAINST Humanoid home robots are on the market - but do we really want them?. Robohub (republished from The Conversation), 2026-03-03. 1X's $20,000 Neo is remote-operated for hard tasks and clumsy at fiddly ones; the IFR estimates useful home androids are about 20 years away.
  3. FOR Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior. arXiv (Park, O'Brien, Cai, Morris, Liang, Bernstein), 2023-04-07. Twenty-five agents with memory, reflection and planning behaved believably and organised a party from one seeded idea.
  4. FOR How Imagineers brought a free-roaming robotic Olaf to life. Attractions Magazine, 2026-03-16. A free-roaming character robot that speaks and interacts with guests opened at Disneyland Paris on 29 March 2026; its degree of autonomy is not stated.
  5. AGAINST Humanoid home robots are on the market - but do we really want them?. Robohub (republished from The Conversation), 2026-03-03. Shows how much of today's 'autonomous' robot behaviour still depends on hidden human operators.
  6. FOR Machine Bias. ProPublica, 2016-05-23. A risk-scoring tool used in sentencing was right about violent reoffending for about 20% of those it flagged, and its errors differed by race.
  7. AGAINST Article 5: Prohibited AI Practices. EU Artificial Intelligence Act (artificialintelligenceact.eu), 2025-02-02. Prohibits AI social scoring that leads to unfair treatment and crime-risk prediction based solely on profiling, in force from 2 February 2025.
  8. CONTEXT FTC Staff Report Finds Large Social Media and Video Streaming Companies Have Engaged in Vast Surveillance of Users with Lax Privacy Controls and Inadequate Safeguards for Kids and Teens. US Federal Trade Commission, 2024-09-19. Personal data was fed into algorithms and AI with little or no ability to opt out, the raw material for any person-level prediction system.
  9. FOR FTC Staff Report Finds Large Social Media and Video Streaming Companies Have Engaged in Vast Surveillance of Users with Lax Privacy Controls and Inadequate Safeguards for Kids and Teens. US Federal Trade Commission, 2024-09-19. Nine companies were found to collect and retain large amounts of data, including from non-users, to fuel targeted advertising and algorithms.
  10. FOR Humanoid home robots are on the market - but do we really want them?. Robohub (republished from The Conversation), 2026-03-03. 1X's remote operators can see inside the home and the sessions are recorded to train future versions.
  11. AGAINST Article 5: Prohibited AI Practices. EU Artificial Intelligence Act (artificialintelligenceact.eu), 2025-02-02. Regulators in the EU have begun to prohibit the worst uses of such data, such as unfair social scoring.
