Did Black Mirror: San Junipero come true?
Partly. Black Mirror: San Junipero (2016) has a P(n) of 64% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A person's mind can be scanned and run in a simulated world indefinitely, as a continuation of that person', is still far off. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2032.
The simulated heaven at the centre of San Junipero is far off: no one can capture a mind, let alone run one. The surrounding machinery is closer. Medically assisted dying is lawful in several places, VR reminiscence is in care homes, and commercial services already hold digital remains of the dead, with mixed commercial results.

How this P(n) was calculated
P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

A person's mind can be scanned and run in a simulated world indefinitely, as a continuation of that person.
Weight 5/5 · Core premise: San Junipero, and every choice Kelly and Yorkie make, depends on a mind surviving inside the servers.
The largest functional wiring map yet covers about a cubic millimetre of mouse visual cortex, and a whole adult fruit fly brain has been mapped. A human brain is more than a million times larger than the mouse sample, and a wiring diagram does not capture what a mind does. Whole-brain emulation has had a technical roadmap since 2008 but no credible date, so this sits outside Nearfi's fifty-year window. 123

Medically assisted dying is lawful, with formal consent rules, including cases where someone else must authorise it for a person who cannot speak.
Weight 4/5 · Major: Yorkie's plan to marry for consent, and Kelly's offer to take her place, drive the plot.
Lawful assisted dying exists in Oregon since 1997 and in Canada since 2016, in Canada at about 5 per cent of all deaths. Neither system lets a spouse or next of kin consent for a person who has lost capacity. Canada allows a written waiver of final consent only in narrow cases, and introduced legislation in October 2026 to allow advance requests. The law has arrived; the proxy-consent version in the episode has not. 456

Older and dying people are given immersive virtual visits to the past as a form of comfort or therapy.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: the visiting hours for the old are how the world works, though the plot is about the two women.
VR reminiscence is in use in care settings and in trials with people with dementia. Reviews find it feasible and well tolerated, promising for mood and social engagement, and inconclusive on cognition. Cost, infrastructure and staff training limit it, and nothing yet approaches the episode's indistinguishable-from-reality experience. 78

A company hosts the dead on its own servers as a paid service, and customers depend on it staying in business.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: the last shot of server racks shows heaven as infrastructure, but the story is about the lovers, not the provider.
Firms already sell interactive recordings and chatbots built from a dead person's data. They have not been a stable business: StoryFile filed for Chapter 11 in May 2024. Researchers have set out the risks of such services, including consent and commercial misuse. What exists is a thin version of the episode's service, without a persistent mind. 910
