Did Snowpiercer come true?

Quick answer

Mostly not yet. Snowpiercer (2013) has a P(n) of 32% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 1 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A cooling intervention overshoots and tips the whole planet into a lasting global ice age within a few years', is still far off. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2040.

Snowpiercer is most prescient about its cause, not its consequence: private and state actors are now trying small-scale stratospheric aerosol injection, and governance is being argued after the fact. The ice age, the permanent sealed ark and the surviving ecology are far beyond any credible path, while insect protein, the film's grimmest food detail, is already on sale.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

  1. SNOW-1

Someone deliberately releases a chemical or aerosol into the stratosphere to cool the planet, without agreement from those affected.

    ARRIVINGMajorEst. 2040 · range 2030–2060Confidence: low

Weight 4/5 · Major: the whole catastrophe starts here, though the plot is about the survivors rather than the release.

Small unsanctioned releases have happened: Make Sunsets launched balloons carrying sulfur particles from Mexico in 2022, and Mexico responded by banning such experiments. A for-profit company, Stardust Solutions, has been set up to pursue the technology. Sanctioned experiments have gone the other way: Harvard cancelled SCoPEx in 2024. Large-scale, sustained deployment that actually changes the climate does not exist, and the date depends on politics more than engineering. 123

  2. SNOW-2

A cooling intervention overshoots and tips the whole planet into a lasting global ice age within a few years.

Weight 5/5 · Core premise: the frozen world is why the train exists and why anyone is on it.

The only observed analogue, the 1991 Pinatubo eruption, cooled the globe by about 0.5 degrees Celsius for up to three years. We found no source suggesting that a deliberate injection could freeze the planet. The National Academies warn of unknown or negative consequences, but those are about rainfall, ozone and politics, not a runaway freeze. We place this far out with a wide range because no credible mechanism is known. 456

  3. SNOW-3

Thousands of people live for years inside a sealed, self-sustaining vehicle that recycles all their air, water and food.

Closed-loop life support exists only at tiny scale. Biosphere 2 sealed eight people for two years from 1991, saw oxygen fall from 20.9 to about 14.5 per cent, injected supplemental oxygen, and supplied about 83 per cent of the crew's diet. The International Space Station reaches about 98 per cent water recovery but still depends on resupply. Scaling to thousands for a decade or more is a different order of problem. 78

  4. SNOW-4

Insects are processed into a mass-produced protein food.

The European Union authorised frozen, dried and powdered house crickets and yellow mealworms as novel foods in 2022, with further insect approvals after, and the Food and Agriculture Organization promotes insects as a protein source. In reality it is a niche, premium product rather than the food of the poor. 910
