Did For All Mankind come true?

Quick answer

Partly. For All Mankind (2019) has a P(n) of 44% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 0 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A Soviet cosmonaut is the first person to walk on the Moon, in 1969, and the Space Race continues for decades instead of ending', diverged: history went another way. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2038.

For All Mankind is an alternate history, so its central premise, a Soviet first landing in 1969, is closed to prediction. The bets it makes on top of that premise are live. Private companies flying crews has already happened. A permanent south-pole Moon base is now official NASA policy, though the show had it in 1973. Humans living on Mars is still a plan, not a schedule, and it has slipped further since the show began.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

  1. FAM-1

A Soviet cosmonaut is the first person to walk on the Moon, in 1969, and the Space Race continues for decades instead of ending.

DIVERGEDCore premiseNo arrival expected in this formConfidence: high

Weight 5/5 · Core premise: the whole series is built on the Soviets landing first and the race never stopping.

History went the other way. Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon on 20 July 1969 and the Soviet crewed lunar programme never landed anyone. The show's stated point of divergence is the survival of chief designer Sergei Korolev, who died on 14 January 1966 after surgery. His death left the N1 rocket to his successors, and all four unmanned N1 launches, between 1969 and 1972, failed. Whether Korolev alive would have changed that is disputed, and a critic cited in his biography argues the Soviets had little chance of beating the Americans either way. This is the premise of the fiction, and nothing now in prospect could make it true. 123

  2. FAM-2

A permanent crewed Moon base at the lunar south pole is established and expanded, and the show has it running by 1973.

    NEARMajorEst. 2038 · range 2032–2055Confidence: low

Weight 4/5 · Major: Jamestown is the setting for most of seasons one and two and the source of their conflicts.

The show has Jamestown founded in 1973, near Shackleton crater, which was chosen because of its promising water deposits. No one has set foot on the Moon since 1972. NASA's current Moon Base plan, updated in October 2026, puts a permanent outpost near the south pole from 2032 onwards, and reported cost is about $30 billion. Artemis II flew around the Moon in April 2026, but Artemis III is now a docking test in Earth orbit, with the first crewed landing set for 2028. Power during the long polar shadow, launch cadence and an unsettled heavy rocket are the main risks, so we set the median six years after NASA's own date. 456

  3. FAM-3

Humans land on Mars and build a permanent, growing settlement there, which has several thousand residents by the 2010s.

    NEARMajorEst. 2050 · range 2040–2075Confidence: low

Weight 4/5 · Major: the Mars race drives seasons three to five, and the settlement's politics are the plot.

No human has travelled beyond the Moon's neighbourhood, and no crewed Mars mission has a funded date. Reporting in 2025 put crewed Mars missions in the 2040s under current plans, with a former astronaut saying the proposed budgets could not pay for them. In February 2026 SpaceX said it was putting its uncrewed Mars attempt on hold in favour of a Moon city, and still talks of starting a Mars city in about five to seven years. The show's 1990s landings and a 2003 base were never realistic here. A base of thousands by 2012 is out of reach, so this claim's date is for the first lasting settlement, not for the size the show gives it. 78

  4. FAM-4

A private company, rather than a government agency, builds and flies crewed spacecraft and takes over space stations, competing with the national programmes.

    ARRIVEDSupportingArrived 2021Confidence: high

Weight 3/5 · Supporting: Helios drives the Mars race and the hotel plot in seasons three and four, but the story is about people.

In the show, Helios Aerospace is founded by Dev Ayesa to reach Mars before NASA or the Soviets, and later takes over the Polaris hotel. The real version is bigger in some ways and smaller in others. SpaceX flew four private citizens on its own Crew Dragon in September 2021, the first orbital flight with no professional astronauts. NASA now buys crew transport and plans to buy commercial stations rather than build them. But NASA is still the main customer, and the private firms are not yet racing the state to another planet, so the show's competitive picture is only partly here. 91011

Evidence
  1. AGAINST Apollo 11. NASA, 2026-11-05. NASA's page records Neil Armstrong as the first human to set foot on the Moon, on 20 July 1969, with Buzz Aldrin second.
  2. CONTEXT N1 (rocket). Wikipedia, 2026-11-05. The Soviet Moon rocket flew four times, between 1969 and 1972, and failed every time. Korolev's death in 1966 is described as having derailed the project.
