Did The Peripheral come true?
Partly. The Peripheral (2014) has a P(n) of 66% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'People are paid to operate human-shaped bodies in distant places by remote control, seeing and acting through the machine in real time', is partly here. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2032.
The Peripheral is most prescient about labour: paid remote operators working machines in distant places, and cheap piloted drones as a normal tool of surveillance and killing, are both real. Its catastrophe is a different matter. The mood of a slow, multicausal crisis is recognisable, but the Jackpot's death toll has no counterpart in current projections.

How this P(n) was calculated
P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

PERIPH-1
People are paid to operate human-shaped bodies in distant places by remote control, seeing and acting through the machine in real time.
Weight 5/5 · Core premise: the peripheral is the book's central device, linking Flynne's world to the future's.
Remotely operated humanoids exist and are on sale. 1X began taking orders for its $20,000 NEO in October 2025, with US deliveries promised for 2026 and human 'Experts' to guide it through tasks it cannot do alone. Press accounts of a demonstration describe a robot controlled by an operator in a VR headset, and the work was slow. Date is later than the sales pitch because reliable, general-purpose control is unproven and the privacy objections are unresolved. 123

PERIPH-2
Cheap, remotely piloted quadcopters are a routine tool of surveillance and killing, flown by operators who are not at the scene.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: Flynne's drone shift is the inciting event, but the plot turns on the peripherals.
In the war in Ukraine, small explosive-carrying drones are reported to cause most battlefield casualties, and a radio-controlled FPV drone can cost as little as $350. The UN's civilian-harm monitoring says short-range drones caused the most civilian casualties in February 2025. Effectiveness is disputed: a former FPV volunteer reports a hit rate of about 43 per cent of sorties, with jamming a major cause of failure. We date arrival to the first full year of the war. 456

PERIPH-3
A slow cascade of climate change, drought, famine, pandemics and political collapse kills about four in five of the world's people.
Weight 4/5 · Major: the Jackpot shapes the London strand and why the future meddles in the past.
Climate stress is real and compounding: the 2025 Global Tipping Points Report says warm-water coral reefs are already crossing their thermal tipping point. But no mainstream projection has a population collapse of that scale. The UN's 2024 revision has world population peaking at about 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s. The estimate assumes a catastrophe of this size is possible but not likely, so the range is wide and sits well beyond the book's own timeline. 78

PERIPH-4
Ordinary small-town businesses make everyday goods on demand with 3D printers.
Weight 2/5 · Texture: Flynne's job at a printing shop sets the scene and is rarely central to the plot.
Additive manufacturing is a real but small industry: $21.9 billion in 2024, with printing services the largest segment at 47 per cent of revenue, and $24.2 billion in 2025. Growth has slowed, machine sales fell about 26 per cent in 2024, and most output is industrial. Local print shops for ordinary goods exist, but not at the scale of the book's county economy. 910
