Did Ready Player One come true?
Largely, yes. Ready Player One (2018) has a P(n) of 78% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 2 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A single persistent, shared virtual world, entered through a headset, becomes where a large share of the population plays, studies and works', is partly here. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2038.
Ready Player One is right that a company-run virtual world can draw over a hundred million daily visitors, sell advertising inside it and pay people real money to build it. It is wrong about the hardware: the audience arrived on phones and consoles, not in headsets, and the best-funded attempt at a headset-first world was cut back in 2026. The full-sensation suit and the world that absorbs most of humanity remain a long way off.

How this P(n) was calculated
P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

RPO-1
A single persistent, shared virtual world, entered through a headset, becomes where a large share of the population plays, studies and works.
Weight 5/5 · Core premise: the OASIS is the setting, the prize and the thing everyone fights over.
The shared world exists, but not in the film's form. Roblox averaged 138 million daily active users in the third quarter of 2026, most of them on phones and consoles rather than headsets, and that was its first annual fall. Meta's headset-first Horizon Worlds drew far less, and in March 2026 Meta moved it towards mobile before reversing the plan to remove it from Quest, leaving the VR version with limited support. A world used by most of humanity through a headset needs cheap, comfortable hardware and a reason to wear it, and neither is in sight. The date is a median for the film's version, not for the phone-based worlds that already exist. 1234

RPO-2
The company that owns a mass virtual world sells advertising placed inside it, in the space users look at and walk through.
Weight 4/5 · Major: IOI's plan to fill the OASIS with advertising is the villain's motive and drives the plot.
Roblox sells advertising inside its worlds: in April 2025 it launched rewarded video ads, where players opt in to a video of up to 30 seconds inside an experience, and it sells them through Google's ad tools. Its developer documentation also describes 3D image, video and portal ad units. The film's version is harsher, with ads forced onto users who can't pay to avoid them, and no major platform sells that today. On Meta's headsets, ads are allowed only in some third-party apps and carry a label. So the claim has arrived in a milder, opt-in form. 567

RPO-3
A virtual world's currency and goods are worth real money, and people earn real incomes from what they build and win inside it.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: ownership of the OASIS is the prize, and the egg hunt only matters because it is worth real money.
Roblox lets creators cash out earned virtual currency for dollars, and in the third quarter of 2025 said it had paid creators $1 billion through the programme in the year, against $923 million the year before. The standard rate is 0.0038 dollars per Earned Robux, with a 30,000 Earned Robux minimum. This is a creator economy, though, not the film's hunt for one prize that hands a single winner a world. The year marks the first reported billion-dollar payout, and the mechanism is older. 8910

RPO-4
Consumers use haptic suits, gloves and omnidirectional treadmills that let the body feel and move through a virtual world.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: Wade's suit, gloves and treadmill are how the OASIS feels real, though the plot rarely turns on them.
Pieces exist. bHaptics sells vests and gloves that turn game audio into vibration, and Virtuix sells Omni One, an omnidirectional treadmill. Teslasuit's full-body suit was shown at CES 2019 but was available only to business customers, for training. No consumer product delivers whole-body sensation, and the existing ones are niche. Arrival here would mean a suit and treadmill that ordinary households buy, which depends on a mass audience for headsets that, as RPO-1 shows, has not yet formed. 111213
