Did Outbreak come true?

Quick answer

Partly. Outbreak (1995) has a P(n) of 59% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A dangerous virus from an African animal host is carried into the United States through the animal trade and spreads to people', has arrived. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2040.

Outbreak is most prescient about where an epidemic starts: a dangerous virus arriving through the animal trade has already happened in miniature. Its town cordon has a civilian cousin, and antibody treatments now exist for Ebola. The airborne leap in days and the cure in hours remain fiction.

How this P(n) was calculated

P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

  1. OUTBREAK-1

A dangerous virus from an African animal host is carried into the United States through the animal trade and spreads to people.

    ARRIVEDCore premiseArrived 2003Confidence: high

Weight 5/5 · Core premise: a smuggled monkey carrying the virus is how the outbreak reaches Cedar Creek.

In 2003 monkeypox reached the US in a shipment of about 800 small mammals from Ghana, including Gambian giant rats and dormice. It spread to prairie dogs at an Illinois dealer and then to people who kept them as pets, giving 71 reported cases in six states by 8 July. It was far milder than the film's Motaba, and two children who were seriously ill both recovered. The route, though, was the film's: wildlife, a dealer, a pet, a person. 123

  2. OUTBREAK-2

A virus spread by contact mutates within days into a respiratory form that passes through the air between strangers.

    NEARMajorEst. 2075 · range 2040–2150+Confidence: low

Weight 4/5 · Major: the airborne mutation turns a village problem into a town-wide crisis and drives the second half.

The WHO describes Ebola as spread by direct contact with body fluids, not through the air, and nothing has shown a haemorrhagic fever virus making that jump. The underlying mechanism is not fanciful: in 2012 Erasmus Medical Center researchers reported that as few as five changes might let H5N1 bird flu pass between ferrets through the air, though it spread less efficiently than the 2009 pandemic flu. That was a deliberate laboratory result. A natural jump in days, in a different virus family, is a much larger claim, and may never happen. 456

  3. OUTBREAK-3

Authorities put a cordon around a small American town and use troops to enforce a quarantine.

    ARRIVINGMajorEst. 2045 · range 2030–2090+Confidence: medium

Weight 4/5 · Major: the sealed town of Cedar Creek is the film's setting and sets its countdown.

In March 2020 New York drew a one-mile containment area around New Rochelle, closing schools, houses of worship and large venues for two weeks and sending National Guard troops to deliver food and clean public spaces. It was a civilian measure, and the governor said people could still move freely. A cordon enforced by soldiers at the edge of an American town, as in the film, has not happened. The median reflects how rarely a country uses force on its own people for a disease. 789

  4. OUTBREAK-4

An antiserum made from a surviving host's antibodies is produced within hours of identifying a new virus and reverses illness in patients.

    ARRIVINGSupportingEst. 2040 · range 2030–2070Confidence: low

Weight 3/5 · Supporting: the cure resolves the plot, but the story turns on the chase and the cover-up.

Antibody therapy for a filovirus now exists: the FDA approved Inmazeb for Zaire ebolavirus in October 2020, and the WHO recommends it and a second antibody. In the PALM trial 33.8 per cent of patients given Inmazeb died within 28 days, against 51 per cent of controls. That took decades and a specific, known virus, whereas the film cures an unknown mutation in a scene. The global goal is a vaccine within 100 days of a new threat, not hours. 101112

  6. AGAINST Ebola disease. World Health Organization, 2025. Ebola spreads by direct contact with blood and body fluids, not through the air.
  7. FOR Governor Cuomo Accepts Recommendation of State Health Commissioner on New Emergency Measures to Contain Novel Coronavirus Cluster in New Rochelle. New York State Governor's Office, 2020-03-10. Sets up a one-mile containment area with 108 cases, closures from 12 to 25 March and National Guard deployed.
  8. CONTEXT NY creates 'containment zone' in coronavirus-hit New Rochelle. Al Jazeera English, 2020-03-10. Reports that troops would clean surfaces and deliver food, with schools shut for two weeks.
