Did Okja come true?
Largely, yes. Okja (2017) has a P(n) of 83% on Nearfi's P(n) Board, our estimate of the chance its future arrives within 20 years. Of its 4 tracked predictions, 1 have arrived and 2 are arriving. Its central premise, 'A corporation engineers a new kind of food animal and sells its meat to the public', is partly here. The next prediction is estimated to arrive around 2030.
Okja is not set in the future, so its fiction is narrow: a giant, gentle, efficient super pig does not exist. Its sharper forecast is the sales pitch, a company-made meat sold as natural and as an answer to hunger, which has partly arrived as gene-edited and cultivated products meet regulators, bans and tiny volumes.

How this P(n) was calculated
P(n) is the chance that this work's future arrives within 20 years, by 2046. For each prediction we turn our estimate into a probability: arrived is 100%, diverged is 0%, and otherwise the low end of our 80% range counts as a 10% chance, the median year 50% and the high end 90%. Each prediction is weighted 1–5 by how pivotal it is to the story, and P(n) is the weighted average. P50 does the same by 2076. P(n), explained.

| OKJA-1 | A corporation engineers a new kind of food animal and sells its meat to the public. Core premise: the Mirando super pig is a company-made animal bred to be eaten; the whole plot hangs on it. |

| OKJA-2 | Livestock are engineered to be far larger and more efficient than conventional animals, eating less and producing less waste. Supporting: the pig's efficiency is the company's sales pitch, though the plot turns on the animal, not the numbers. |

OKJA-1
A corporation engineers a new kind of food animal and sells its meat to the public.
Weight 5/5 · Core premise: the Mirando super pig is a company-made animal bred to be eaten; the whole plot hangs on it.
Gene-edited pigs and cattle have regulatory clearance in the US for food. The FDA approved the GalSafe pig in December 2020, made a low-risk determination for CRISPR-edited slick-coat cattle in March 2022, and approved PIC's PRRS-resistant pig in April 2025. PIC says sales will not begin until more export markets have signed off. These are small edits, not a new species, and consumer acceptance is unproven, so we date wide commercial sales a few years out. 123

OKJA-2
Livestock are engineered to be far larger and more efficient than conventional animals, eating less and producing less waste.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: the pig's efficiency is the company's sales pitch, though the plot turns on the animal, not the numbers.
No engineered food animal approaches the size or efficiency in the film. The nearest attempt to cut an animal's environmental footprint, Guelph's Enviropig, which excreted less phosphorus, lost its funding in 2012. Approved edits so far target disease and heat tolerance rather than scale. The idea is plausible in principle, but it faces both regulatory and consumer resistance, and there is a real chance nobody tries it. 45

OKJA-3
Undercover or leaked footage from inside industrial animal facilities reaches the public and shapes the debate.
Weight 3/5 · Supporting: the activists' footage drives the film's second half, but the rescue plot comes first.
Undercover investigations at farms and slaughterhouses are established, with documented cases such as the 2012 Mercy For Animals video from an Idaho dairy. Courts struck down Idaho's and Iowa's laws against such filming in 2015 and 2019, but in January 2024 the Eighth Circuit upheld two Iowa ag-gag laws, so the practice is legal in some places and risky in others. Arrival is dated to the 2012 case in the sources, though the practice is older. 678

OKJA-4
A corporation launches a new kind of meat, branded as natural and low-footprint, and pitches it as an answer to feeding a growing population.
Weight 4/5 · Major: the Mirando pitch and brand drive the satire and the plot, which concerns what the animal stands for.
The USDA cleared Upside Foods and Good Meat to sell cultivated chicken in June 2023, and the UK cleared cultivated meat in pet food in July 2024. Sales remain tiny, and several US states have banned the product. Florida's ban was upheld on appeal in March 2026. The branded, pitched-at-the-future product has arrived, but not at the scale the film's slogan implies, and the political fight is about the word natural. 91011
