Did Contagion Come True? A Claim-by-Claim Check Against Covid

Steven Soderbergh's 2011 film is the most accurate in our archive. We checked its four ledger claims against 2020 and 2021, then picked three more pandemic stories for anyone who wants them.

Contagion came true almost point for point. A bat-linked virus out of Asia, a vaccine within a year, a bogus cure sold online and passes to get into public places all happened in 2020 and 2021, and all four of the film's central claims are ARRIVED in our ledger. It scores 7.8 and is the most accurate film we've reviewed.

What it got wrong was us. The film's virus kills about a quarter of the people it infects, and society responds with looting and empty shelves. Covid was much less lethal, and that made it harder: serious enough to close the world and mild enough for millions to doubt it. In February 2021 Britain's health secretary, Matt Hancock, said he'd ordered far more vaccine than advisers recommended partly because he'd watched the film.

Below is each claim from its ledger. For the sources, read the review.

Contagion

Score 7.8Nearness: ARRIVEDRead the review

Soderbergh shoots a pandemic as a procedural with no villain and no hero, and a camera that lingers on every surface an infected person touched. Kate Winslet and Jennifer Ehle are the best of a crowded cast. Its weak point is the conspiracy blogger, who carries the weight of all human irrationality on one set of shoulders. Watch it for the shiver of recognition every five minutes.

Claim by claim

A bat-linked virus becomes a pandemic within months: ARRIVED, 2020. A new coronavirus with bat relatives spread out of Wuhan, and the WHO called it a pandemic on 11 March 2020. The origin is still contested: a 2024 analysis of Wuhan market samples found animals that could have carried it, while the FBI director said in 2023 that his agency thought a lab leak most likely.

A vaccine within a year: ARRIVED, 2020. Britain approved the first Covid vaccine on 2 December 2020, and the first jab went into an arm six days later. The film hands its vaccine out by lottery on birthdates.

A bogus cure sold online: ARRIVED, 2021. In the film it's forsythia. In reality it was ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug many people knew as a livestock dewormer, pushed online as a miracle cure on the back of bad science.

Proof of vaccination to get back into public places: ARRIVED, 2021. The film has wristbands. The EU's Digital COVID Certificate came into use on 1 July 2021.

Station Eleven

Score 8.1Nearness: ARRIVINGRead the review

HBO Max's drama is the one that wants to cheer you up. Its grounded planes, sealed flats and a quarantined ship all match 2020, and the ledger marks all three ARRIVED. The flu that kills nearly everyone is FAR: Covid was associated with about 14.9 million excess deaths in its first two years, roughly one person in five hundred. Scores 8.1.

03
Film · 1995 · Terry Gilliam

12 Monkeys

Score 8.2Nearness: FARRead the review

Terry Gilliam's 1995 film is the one about the warning nobody believes. Its death toll, 99 per cent of humanity, is FAR, but its sense of a pandemic as something that happens while experts argue was uncannily close. The WHO went from first report to pandemic assessment in about ten weeks. Scores 8.2.

04
Film · 1995 · Wolfgang Petersen

Outbreak

Score 6.9Nearness: ARRIVINGRead the review

A 1995 studio thriller with a monkey, a small town and a cinema. It got the animal-trade route right, with monkeypox arriving in the US through imported African mammals in 2003, and the sealed town half right. Its overnight antiserum is the least believable part. Scores 6.9.

Questions
Is Contagion realistic?

The science is, and our ledger shows it. Its authors consulted epidemiologists and a virologist during writing, and the film's route from bats to a pig farm to a chef's hands is the pattern real spillovers follow. Its lethality and its idea of public behaviour are the unrealistic parts.

Did Contagion predict Covid?

It didn't predict it; it described how a pandemic works, and Covid followed much of that pattern. Screenwriter Scott Z. Burns has said he had good advice rather than a crystal ball. Our P(n) Board marks every central claim ARRIVED.

What should I watch after Contagion?

Station Eleven is the best match in tone and score. For the full set, see sci-fi about pandemics and collapse.
