Why 4: it takes a task and works through it in its own cloud environment without step-by-step input, but its work still needs reviewing, and it does not act unasked.
What it does. Cognition introduced Devin in March 2024 as "the first AI software engineer", an agent that takes a task and works through it in its own cloud environment. Devin 2.0, in April 2025, cut the entry price from about $500 a month to $20. After buying Windsurf in July 2025, Cognition renamed that editor Devin Desktop in June 2026, so local and cloud agents can be managed from one place. Cognition raised more than $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation in September 2026.
Where it falls short. The "software engineer" label sets expectations that an agent which still needs its work reviewed does not meet. Cognition has not published independent evaluations of how often Devin completes real tasks unaided.
